Brand Bidding
Google AdsDefinition
Brand bidding is the practice of running paid search ads on your own brand name or a competitor's brand name as a keyword. It is one of the most debated tactics in Google Ads because you may already rank organically for your own brand.
Bidding on your own brand captures users at the highest-intent moment — they already know you and are searching specifically for your business. Brand CPCs are typically €0.10–€0.50, making it efficient. The risk of not bidding is that competitors take the top spot and divert your traffic.
Competitor brand bidding targets other companies' brand names. It can be effective for market disruption but tends to produce lower CTRs and higher CPCs since users were looking for a specific competitor. Google allows competitor bidding but prohibits using competitor trademarks in ad text.
Create a dedicated brand campaign with exact match and phrase match variations of your brand name, common misspellings, and brand + product combinations. Set a modest budget — brand campaigns typically convert at high rates with low CPCs. Monitor the auction insights report for competitor activity.
Without brand bidding, competitors can appear above your organic listing for your own name, stealing traffic you earned through brand building. Brand campaigns also provide a controlled messaging opportunity and protect against negative PR or competitor claims in ad copy.
